They work wonderfully for Instagram as they play automatically and really catch your audience off-guard when they notice part of your photo is moving.

1. Compelling enough stand alone as a static photograph
2. One element of subtle movement
3. Loops seamlessly

There are apps out there that boast of being able to create cinemagraphs from your photos/videos but usually fall short in execution. Cinemagraphs require careful planning and editing to be effective, and when executed properly are very engaging pieces of content.
